What Kind of Career Can I Expect?
Registered nurses (RNs), regardless of specialty or work setting, treat patients, educate patients and the public about various medical conditions, and provide advice and emotional support to patients’ family members. RNs record patients’ medical histories and symptoms help perform diagnostic tests and analyze results, operate medical equipment, administer treatment and medications, and help with patient follow-up and rehabilitation.
RNs teach patients and their families how to manage their illness or injury, explaining post-treatment home care needs; diet, nutrition, and exercise programs; and self-administration of medication and physical therapy. RNs work to promote general health by educating the public on warning signs and symptoms of disease.
What is the Outlook for Job Opportunities and Pay?
The long-term employment outlook for RNs is expected to be excellent. In fact, RNs are projected to generate among the largest number of new jobs for any occupation. (Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook 2008-2009)
What skills, traits, or preparation would be helpful?
Individuals with a caring and compassionate nature who desire to serve others make excellent nurses. Other assets include keen observation and decision-making skills, the ability to function well under stress, and finely tuned verbal and written communication skills. Nurses often lift up to 50 lbs, bend, reach, and kneel, and frequently use science and math skills.

- The ASRN program is 70 credit hours, including prerequisite and co-requisite courses.
