Working in photography, artists’ books and encaustic collage, Shawna Hanel is an internationally exhibited artist. Her creative work is diverse; ranging from detailed nature studies to highly structured and staged compositions, often crucially contextualized by accompanying text. What unifies this work is an abiding concern with how we ought relate to the world in which we live. It has been collected by the New York Public Library Shomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, the University of California Los Angeles and the University of Colorado Boulder, Norlin Library Special Collections among others.

Hanel’s devotion to educating began over two decades ago when she taught ballet as an undergraduate art history major at Boise State University. She then spent several years teaching English as a foreign language in Indonesia, Chile and Taiwan before pursuing her M.A. at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT University) in Australia. She is most passionate about teaching in the visual arts and hopes to inspire similar enthusiasm in her students.
