A Geographic Information System is an application of computer hardware and software that allows users to capture, analyze and display geospatial data.

If you have used MapQuest or Google Earth on the Internet, you have used a basic form of GIS. In more elaborate systems, GIS technologies have been applied to help analysts and decision-makers in complex applications related to agriculture, public health, transportation, urban planning, crime analysis, environmental planning and marketing analysis, among others.
