A Pilot Training Series Targeting College Readiness
This week, College of Western Idaho (CWI) welcomed 14 incoming freshman students participating in a five-week long summer pilot training program packed with intense studies to increase their readiness for college. The program, fittingly named Re-Boot Camp, is a first-time program for incoming fall Professional Technical Education students whose test scores placed them into remedial, pre-100 level, courses in Math and English.

Through a rigorous five-week study program (split daily between coursework, class time, and tutoring sessions) students will focus on math, English, computer applications, study skills, and familiarization with CWI student resources. The program is free for qualified students and the sessions will equip them with the proficiencies and confidence to raise test scores and begin their college experience with improved skills and abilities.

The students’ first day of camp began with a welcome by Dean of Professional Technical Education, Will Fanning, introductions by the camp team of advisors and instructors, a tour of the campus, and completion of an initial skills assessment test.

“The students are very eager to sharpen their skills and start the fall semester with a new confidence,” said Fanning. “CWI’s team of advisors, instructors, and tutoring staff has set high expectations for this program and are looking forward to helping these students start college on the right foot and succeed in completing a degree.”

The camp will be held at the Nampa Campus Micron Center for Professional Technical Education, Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and will conclude with a completion ceremony at the CWI Library on August 8. Funding of the program was made possible by the C3T grant which provides funding for the Idaho Ladders to Success Project, promoting student retention and completion. Students who complete the five-week camp are eligible to receive a $500 scholarship that can be used towards their tuition and fees at CWI.
