CWI Tobacco-Free Campus

College of Western Idaho (CWI) is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for its employees, students, and visitors. Based on the findings of the U.S. Surgeon General - that exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke and use of tobacco products are significant health hazards - the CWI Board of Trustees adopted a Tobacco-Free Campus policy that will take effect on Jan 1, 2015.

As CWI transitions to a Tobacco-Free Campus, the College has established restrictions regarding smoking and the use of electronic/vapor cigarettes. Please refer to AP 4351 in CWI's Policies & Procedures for complete information and guidance.

Respectful Communication

CWI’s Tobacco-Free Campus policy is intended to be positive and promote a healthy learning environment. In the spirit of cooperation, CWI encourages employees, students, and guests to be non-confrontational and respectful of all members of our campus community when communicating CWI policies. In return, tobacco users are asked to adhere to the new policy and also be respectful of former and non-tobacco users. Enforcement will be achieved through education, awareness, and cooperation, which makes it important to remain courteous and respectful when addressing the Tobacco-Free Campus policy.

Below are a few tips for effectively communicating CWI’s Tobacco-Free Campus policy.

Be respectful

• Please recognize that employees, students, or guests using tobacco products or electronic/vapor cigarettes on campus may be unfamiliar with the Tobacco-Free policy. For others, the transition may be challenging. Please be courteous and respectful in communicating that tobacco- use is not permitted on campus. You are also encouraged to share the CWI Tobacco-Free Campus webpage for more information.

Know the policy

• In order to properly share changes to CWI’s policies, it is important to fully understand restrictions and expectations.

Adhere to the policy

• All employees and students are expected to adhere to CWI’s Policies and Procedures. Communication, awareness, and personal responsibility will help in educating the community. Repeat offenders are subject to discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct, or Employee Policies and Procedures.

Utilize CWI Resources

• CWI Campus Security is here to help the College community. If you notice any recurring CWI policy violation, please contact security personnel so they may inform the appropriate individual or department. This not only helps ensure appropriate steps are being taken to address the situation, but it also allows CWI to make sure adequate signage is in place to communicate policies.
