How technical do I need to be to be able to take online classes?

Before registering for an online course you should be able to answer YES to the following questions:

  • Are you comfortable using computers?
  • Do you have good time management skills?

Online courses typically follow the time-frame of a normal semester and are not self-paced

  • Can you easily put your ideas in writing?
  • Is interacting with other students important to you?
  • Are you a self-starter, and can you assert yourself to complete tasks?

You should also think about how you will access your online courses.  You should be able to answer YES to these questions as well:

  • Do you have access to a reliable desktop or laptop computer?
  • Do you have regular high-speed (not dial-up) Internet access?
  • Can you access the Internet daily, 24/7?
  • Do you have a private and quiet place to do your homework away from household distractions?

Finally, you should have the following basic computer skills:

  • You can easily access, send, and receive e-mail
  • You know how to attach documents to send in an e-mail
  • You understand how to identify different file types such as a .doc, .txt, .jpg, etc. and what those extensions mean
  • You are comfortable performing searches for information on the Internet
  • You can easily switch between applications such as email, Microsoft Word, and a PDF reader
