A&P Labs

Flex Lab is a different teaching model for the CWI Anatomy and Physiology labs. This format allows students to find lab times that accommodate their individual schedules on a week-to-week basis while completing the same lab activities in all sections.

  • Students will register for a single section of A&P lab (B227L or B228L) when registering for their lecture section. 
  • Once they are registered in the course, students will have the ability to schedule the entire semester at once or they will have the ability to schedule their labs on a week-to-week basis.  Timeslots will include day, evening and Saturday times.  Students will be able to reschedule their time, if a conflict arises.

What Is The Flex Lab?

Flex Lab is a new model for the CWI Anatomy and Physiology labs beginning the Spring 2016. This format allows students to find lab times that accommodate their individual schedules on a week-to-week basis while completing the same lab activities in all sections.

How Does It Work?

  • Students will register for a single section of A&P lab (B227L or B228L) when registering for their lecture section. 
  • Once they are registered in the course, students will have the ability to schedule the entire semester at once or they will have the ability to schedule their labs on a week-to-week basis.  Timeslots will include day, evening and Saturday times.
  • If a scheduling conflict arises, students will have the ability to reschedule their time slot within the current week, if there is space.
  • Once a student has signed up for a lab time, they simply have to attend the lab they have selected.
  • It is important to understand that it is the student’s responsibility to sign up for a time slot and to attend lab. Failure to do so will result in a zero for that week’s activities.

By January 4th, 2016, all registered students will receive detailed instructions on how to book their times in the lab.

Will This Format Change The Curriculum?

The lab activities and curriculum will continue to meet the standards set by CWI, HAPS (Human Anatomy and Physiology Society), and Idaho State Board of Education-General Education Standards. Additionally, the labs will adhere to the Core Concepts and Competencies as presented in the report: Vision and Change in Undergraduate Biology Education: A Call to Action.

These labs will continue to prepare students for advanced studies in Biology or acceptance to a professional program.

What Happens In Lab?

  • Prior to attending lab, students will be given materials to prepare themselves for the in-lab activities on Blackboard.
  • After completing these activities, students will attend lab and complete hands on activities within the laboratory. During this timeframe students will be expected to master that week’s competencies.
  • To complete the lab, students must demonstrate they have mastered these competencies through an exit process with the instructor. 
  • This exit process may occur at any time during the lab, and is based on the student’s preferences and pace of learning.  This process can be repeated as often as needed, with study time in-between assessments.

If I Need More Time?

If at the end of the time slot you haven’t completely mastered the weekly content or would like more time, you may either book another time slot later in the week or, if there are open seats in the next time slot, you may stay for that period of time as well.

Who Are The Lab Instructors?

The same faculty who have been teaching labs at CWI will continue to teach the labs. These faculty members will be in the laboratory at all open times to help students with the lab materials.  In addition to having access to instructors in a face-to-face setting, one faculty member will be responsible for all online materials, grades and other issues, and this faculty member’s contact information will be made available to all students.  Students will be provided with a published schedule that will indicate which faculty members will be present at each lab time slot.
