Program Overview
Enrolling in College of Western Idaho’s (CWI) Medical Administrative Support program will provide you exposure to a profession that performs a variety of duties in a medical environment. Physicians rely on well-trained medical administrative support professionals to assist in the operation of a medical office and the documentation of patient care. Successful students in this program typically possess above-average skills in communication, organization, and attention to detail.
Specialized coursework focuses on medical terminology and body structures, medical transcription, health information management, and insurance billing. This program is competency based, specifying student performance objectives required for employment. Previous training or experience may be substituted for coursework if competence is demonstrated through testing with permission of the instructor. The program concludes with a capstone employment-skills class, which will help prepare you for the job search and introduce you to potential employers.
What will you learn to do?
- Manage and maintain all aspects of an office environment
- Master the use of the latest workplace technology and computer software for word processing, presentations, spreadsheets, databases, and electronic calendars
- Schedule appointments using specialized medical software
- Maintain medical records and prepare correspondence
- Prepare insurance claims, patient billing, and manage office activities
- Compose and process correspondence
- Transcribe medical reports
- Create presentations
- Arrange travel and meetings; maintain physician calendars
- Submit insurance claims and maintain financial records
- Schedule hospital admissions and surgeries

- Associate of Applied Science Degree (AAS) – approximately two years
- Technical Certificate (TC) – approximately one year
